The Aboriginals are really spiritual and religious people. They don’t believe in gods that they cannot see, but they often recognise things in the nature as their gods. This may be a plant or an animal, but they can also use images in rock art shelters or big landscapes as some kind of gods or spiritual feelings. Aborigine groups believe in many different gods, so their religion is not very easy. There isn’t one religion that covers the whole Aborigine population in Australia because every group has their own religion.
A place that is especially special and spiritual for the Aborigines is the giant red rock called Uluru, or Ayers Rock in English. The rock is in the middle of Australia. It stands at the southern end of Northern Territory, about 75 kilometres from the South Australian border. Uluru is the biggest rock in the world. It is 350 meters high and 9 kilometres around. The rock belongs to a group of Aboriginal people called “Pitjantjatara” and “Yankunytjatjara”. These are very difficult words. So, the people say, “Call us Anangu. It is easier.”
